ICOM-CC is pleased to announce an upcoming online roundtable discussion developed in cooperation with the ICOM Myanmar and ICOM Heritage Protection Department and in response to the severe damage caused by the March 2025 earthquake in Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay.
This event brings together international specialists to address the urgent challenges facing colleagues in Myanmar as they work to stabilize, assess, and recover damaged museum buildings and collections. The discussion will highlight practical methodologies, lessons learned from global earthquake response, and opportunities for sustained collaboration across the cultural heritage sector.
The session will focus on the impact of the earthquake on the National Museum (Nay Pyi Taw), where numerous sandstone, marble, earthen, and wooden objects were damaged, and where several buildings suffered significant structural failure. The roundtable aims to support local decision-making by sharing relevant expertise in conservation, documentation, structural assessment, and preventive measures.
Key themes include:
• Emergency response and stabilization of affected collections
• Damage assessment methodologies for stone, wood, earthen materials, and mixed collections
• Structural considerations and the relationship between building performance and collection safety
• Documentation strategies to support recovery, rehousing, and long-term planning
• Approaches to interdisciplinary and international collaboration in the aftermath of natural disasters
Presentations will be pre-recorded and made available to registered participants ahead of the event, with the live session dedicated to a moderated roundtable, brief speaker introductions, and open Q&A.
This event is designed for conservators, heritage protection professionals, collection managers, emergency planners, and all colleagues engaged in the preservation of cultural heritage at risk from natural hazards. It offers a unique opportunity to exchange knowledge, learn from diverse experiences, and contribute to strengthening earthquake resilience within the museum sector.
