Wood Furniture and Lacquer Working Group

Title: Protecting a Wooden Legacy: Decision-Making in the Conservation of Ancient Egyptian Artifacts

The session is planned as a 120-minutes online meeting.

Three professionals from different backgrounds have been invited as keynote speakers will give detailed talks:

  1. Geoffrey Killen (Independent scholar, leading Egyptologist, wood technologist, and furniture historian).
  2. Katharina Stövesand (PhD candidate at the University of Cologne / head of the El-Hibe Coffins Project).
  3. Caterina Zaggia (PhD candidate in Archaeological Science at the University of Cambridge).

Learning objectives of this online session.

By the end of this event, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand historical and modern approaches to the conservation of ancient Egyptian wooden artifacts, with a focus on selected case studies.
  2. Evaluate interdisciplinary methods including collaborative approaches between archaeology and conservation science in the preservation of wooden artifacts.
  3. Identify key material components of ancient Egyptian coffin pastes through multi-analytical techniques and assess their implications for conservation strategies.
  4. Critically assess decision-making processes in conservation interventions, balancing material integrity, historical authenticity, and long-term preservation.
  5. Engage with current research and methodologies in wooden artifact conservation, fostering dialogue among professionals, researchers, and students in the field of cultural heritage.
