Preventive Conservation

Preventive Conservation is one of those ICOM-CC Working Groups which concern to all the members of our Committee. It is under this name that all the activities aimed to delay the ageing of the works of art, protecting them from unnatural degrade, are gathered.

Past Programmes

The coordinators of the Working Group Preventive Conservation are:

Preventive Conservation has been created after the Trennial Meeting of Washington in 1993 grouping together three pre-existent Working Groups: Lighting and Climate Control, Control of Biodeterioration and Care of Works of Art in Transit. One more group concerning a research area of great actuality, Disaster Preparedness has been added to the Working Group after the Triennial Meeting of Edinburgh in 1996.

The Research Areas under Preventive Conservation

Lighting and Climate Control - The Research Area Lighting and Climate Control contributes to the better understanding of the effects that elements like light, heat or humidity have on works of art.
It is also prerogative of this Research Area to determine the best climatic and lighting condition in which each art objects should be exhibited.

Control of Biodeterioration - The Assistant Co-ordinator for the Research Area Control of Biodeterioration has not been appointed. For information concerning the Research Area, please contact the Working Group's Coordinator.

Care of Works of Art in Transit - The Assistant Co-ordinator for the Research Area Care of Works of Art in Transit has not been appointed. For information concerning the Research Area, please contact the Working Group's Coordinator.

The Working Group Preventive Conservation publishes an annual Newsletter which includes contributions from all its Research Areas.
