Electronic Media Group Call for Papers: American Institute for Conservation (AIC) 37th Annual Meeting
Los Angeles, California
Theme: Conservation 2.0 – New Directions.
The Electronic Media Group would like to invite papers following the theme of Conservation 2.0 – New Directions, highlighting the ways in which emerging technologies are affecting the conservation field. This is an ideal topic for this specialty group, corresponding with the most important issues confronting EMG professionals: the migration of technologies from one format to another and the use of new technologies to preserve obsolete components. We will also happily accept other abstracts related to electronic media conservation issues and the education of conservators of electronic media. Please submit an abstract of 150 words or less (with a title and author) to Program Chair Gwynne Ryan at GRyan@mfa.org before September 26, 2008. Presentations should be 25 minutes in length.

Interview Methodology for Conservators
21 April 2008, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, Denver
International Network for the Conservation of Contemporary Art, North
America (INCCA-NA)
More info
Venue: AIC Annual Conference, Denver, CO
Speakers:
Richard Cándida Smith, Professor of History and Director, Regional Oral
History Office, University of California, Berkeley
Jill Sterrett, Director of Collections and Conservation, SFMOMA
Joyce Hill Stoner, Professor of Art Conservation, Univ. of Delaware;
Coordinator, FAIC Oral History Project
Glenn Wharton, Time-Based Media Conservator, MoMA; Research Scholar,
NYU
Interviews with artists, fabricators, and historians contribute
significantly to the care of cultural heritage and art conservators find
themselves increasingly in the role of interviewer. Training conservators
in interview methodology will ensure that we have effective ways of
conducting, archiving, and disseminating interviews and it is hoped that
these interviews will serve the understanding and knowledge of our
successors. In this workshop, members of the conservation community who
have done ground-breaking work in this area will share their unique
viewpoints and examine a variety of processes for gathering essential
information. The speakers will present model projects in the field, such
as INCCA’s Artist Archives Database and the FAIC Oral History program.
Historian Richard Candida-Smith, who directs a major university oral
history program with a significant arts-interviewing program, will explore
issues surrounding this complex topic and teach basic but effective
interview techniques. This one-day course will include the presentation
and critique of case studies and will involve attendees in active
participation through small group exercises.

The Object in Transition: A Cross Disciplinary Conference on the
Preservation and Study of Modern and Contemporary Art
January 25-26, 2008
Getty Center, Los Angeles
More info
Presented by the Getty Conservation Institute and the Getty Research
Institute, "The Object in Transition: A Cross Disciplinary Conference
on the Preservation and Study of Modern and Contemporary Art", will
explore some of the key issues surrounding the conservation of
contemporary sculpture, painting, and mixed-media artworks, and the
collaborative possibilities, primarily between conservators, art
historians, and curators, working in these fields.
The two-day event will feature intensive professional dialogues on
case studies and general panel discussions. Topics will include the
importance of an artwork's surface, dealing with process, the
artist's voice and intent, the life and death of objects, and
examining multi-disciplinary collaboration. A number of relevant art
works are anticipated to be on display, enabling the audience to
actively participate in the discussion of these works.
In addition, a panel discussion, open to the public, with three
influential contemporary artists (to be announced) in conversation
with Christian Scheidemann (Private Conservator in NY) and Elisabeth
Sussman (curator at the Whitney Museum of Art) will be held on
Thursday evening, January 24, 2008 in the Harold M. Williams
Auditorium at the Getty Center.

ICOM-CC Conference Session 2007
Managing a Finite Resource
Balancing conservation and Use of Collections
ICOM-CC is the largest of the International Committees of ICOM with over 1500 members worldwide from
every branch of the museum and conservation profession. ICOM-CC aims to promote the conservation,
investigation and analysis of culturally and historically significant works and to further the goals
of the conservation profession. ICOM-CC is built up of specialist 22 Working Groups, which actively
communicate with their members through newsletters, meetings and at the ICOM-CC Triennial Meeting.
The Triennial Meeting brings the membership of ICOM-CC together to report and to review current research. Over 1000 papers have been published in the Meeting Pre-prints in the past twenty years.
During the ICOM General Conference in Vienna ICOM-CC would like to invite interested ICOM members to
a special session addressing the following topics:
- Is it short-term political agendas or the long-term specialist's view that governs what we preserve and how?
- How do we value and understand the process of preservation compared to the 'value' of the object?
- What parameters do we utilise when balancing the costs and benefits of conservation both today and in the long term?
- How do we assess and manage the huge pressures put on objects and conservators to meet the growing demands of visitors, travelling exhibitions and the long term preservation collections?
- Collections should be used - not consumed?
- Do the levels of funding for collections care reflect the economic value of those collections to society?
